Who are M&D?

M&D Conferences was set up by a group of doctors and educators who aim to expose the reality of medical school and medical careers. We organise one day medical careers conferences held at well respected NHS hospitals for students who are considering a career in medicine. Our aim is not to overtly promote medicine but to arm our delegates with information so as they can make an informed choice.

In addition M&D offer a range of tailor made services aimed at helping you achieve your full potential, including interview practice (M&D Interviews), UCAS form preparation & the provision Pre-Medical courses (M&D Pre-Med), contact us for further information.

Is this for me?

Our conferences are suitable for anybody considering a career in medicine. The majority of our delegates will be in the process of choosing their A Level's. That said current undergraduates will also find the day of immense benefit, yielding an insight into postgraduate entry into medical school and a chance to meet current students & junior doctors.

Will attending improve my chances of getting in?

Attending M&D Conference will enable you to demonstrate on your UCAS form that you have made an effort to find out what medical school and medicine are all about. Our discussion group sessions will also strengthen your interview through debating current scientific, ethical and socioeconomic issues relevant to medicine.

We obviously cannot guarantee that will succeed but our aim is to give you the best possible chance and inform you of alternatives if applicable.

Who will be delivering the sessions?

Modern medicine is dependent on multidisciplinary team working. Our modern courses are delivered by a cross-section of the medical profession, first-aid trainers, clinical skills staff and educators. Our doctors are chosen to represent medicine fairly and not overtly promote it as a career choice. This means we will have both junior doctors and consultants, both surgeons & physicians from a range of specialities.

During lunch current medical students will be on hand to chat informally about there experiences to date and will be able to answer any questions or fears you may have about what to expect in medical school.

Our key-note speakers are selected from a pool of well respected medics and non-medics including James Burnett author of "Getting into Medical School" now in its 7th edition.

What age are delegates?

We aim for conferences to be as diverse as possible. This means that we do not adhere to rigid age requirements. Our conferences should be of equal value to Year 11 pupil who feels that they have already made their minds up, a Year 12 pupil who has yet to do so and a mature student who wants a change in career.

What should I wear?

Common sense should prevail here. Our conferences are often held at weekends, thus we do not expect delegates to be attired as if they were attending interview. That said our conferences are held in real hospitals and led by doctors, consultants & professors. At medical school you will find that it is unwise to adorn yourself with mohicans, ripped clothing, excessive piercing, bizarre hair colourings, skirts that could be mistaken for belts etc. This is not just because it attracts unwanted attention in lectures and tutorials, it also looks unprofessional and you are after all expressing a desire to be a professional.

What do I need to bring with me?

A note pad and a pen will be useful to take useful notes during lectures and practicals.

Lunch arrangements?

Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided through out the day and lunch will also be provided for each student.

Can my parents come?

We will try our best to accommodate parents, guardians & teachers accompanying delegates as long as advance notice is given. That said we are limited by the fire & safety regulations of the hospital so this may be on a "first come, first served" basis.

Where can I park my car?

The hospital has several car parks on site and are charged by the hour. Please see hospital webpage for further information.

What about dentistry?

As you may had guessed, the ‘D’ in M&D Conferences stands for dentistry. Although a lot of emphasis is put on a career in Medicine, some prospective dental students may find it beneficial to attend our conferences if they would like a glimpse of the medical world, before they make their final career decision.

Transferring from dentistry to medicine or vice-versa is very difficult after you start the course. It also will not look too good if you reapply through UCAS for different courses and may attract some probing questions at interview if you get that far. It is far better to arm yourself with the necessary information to make an informed choice before you apply.

We are looking into holding similar conference for prospective dental students in the near future so you are advised to register and indicate your interest, so we can keep you updated on future events.

When is your next conference?

Details of this will be sent to you in due course. In the meantime, you are advised to register so we can keep you posted.
