   our origin

M&D Conferences was set up by a group of doctors and educators who aim to expose the reality of medical school and medical careers. Our first hand experience in the fields of medicine and education brought us to the conclusion that students pursue a career in medicine for a variety of reasons, some more valid and evidence based than others. We also know of some disillusioned medics in the field who feel that they may have embarked on a career in medicine for the wrong reasons. We aim to address these issues through our conferences.

Our origin & ethos

Opening windows ... informing choice    opening windows

The aim of our conferences is to open the window on the world of medicine. We are not here to try to overtly promote medicine as there are enough applicants to fill every place at medical schools many times over. We aim to arm delegates with the information necessary to make an informed decision as to whether to pursue a career in one of the most demanding yet rewarding of professions. This is achieved through a series of lectures and small group discussions which encourage delegates to explore their motivations to purse medicine as a career and their perceptions of the qualities required in a doctor.

The decision to pursue a career in medicine will be one of the biggest decisions a student will make and a decision that is made at a relatively early age. Current statistics show that on average most people will change their career three times in their life however; this is not true for the medical profession. Our conferences contain career guidance sessions aimed at demonstrating options before, during and after medical school.

A career for life

Preperation for selection

Application to medical school is a highly selective and competitive process. Many obstacles need to be overcome to achieve the goal of a place at a UK medical school. In addition to the aforementioned career guidance sessions we have sessions aimed at best preparing suitable candidates for selection. These include sessions debating current scientific, ethical and socioeconomic issues relevant to medicine. In addition on of our "in-house" educators will go through the UCAS application process emphasising the best way to proceed and common pitfalls in applying for medicine.
