Why Us?
There are other courses or events which take place offering medical work-experience and seminars, so why choose M&D Experience?
- Unlike other courses which can be run in any lecture theatre, our events take place entirely within a hospital. This is probably the only event of its kind to take place entirely within a hospital, amongst busy doctors who have access to a range of medical equipment to demonstrate with, as well as access to patients who may be involved.
- At M&D Experience, we feel it is important for students considering a career in medicine or dentistry to build ties with hospitals local to them. This also allows students easy access to attend, avoiding long distance travel and overnight stay, which can be costly.
- Medical and dental schools like students who have taken the initiative to get involved with their local hospital, which can often be associated with the medical school itself. Admissions tutors and members of the medical school interview panel may have actually worked at the hospital as well.
- Although M&D Experience is approached by thousands of students, we group all our practical workshop sessions into small numbers, allowing students more of an opportunity to ask questions, talk one-to-one with practising junior doctors and consultants, and really get involved throughout the day. We keep our group sizes to a minimum as we feel it is important, especially in the group work-shop sessions that students really get the most out of the day.
- Unlike other courses, our events are more then just a series of lectures, In addition to lectures by key speakers, the M&D Experience day is broken up by small group practical sessions. These sessions allow students to gain some insight into the practical ability required by doctors or dentists, such as reading x-rays and suturing.
- M&D Experience aims not to promote a career in medicine, but to expose it. Many of the students who have attended in the past have never stepped into a hospital (since they were born!). Our events allow anyone considering medicine to have access to considering a career that is often regarded as elite and open only to a select few. Widening participation and access to medicine is something that many local hospitals are involved with and therefore our events are very well received by the local community.
- As the cost of the event is low and the location is usually at a local hospital, this also adds further access to the medical profession.
- Unlike other courses, our events usually take place within a local hospital. This means that doctors from all levels of the profession are able to participate. This includes medical students, junior doctors who have just graduated, GPs and consultants who are specialists in their chosen fields of medicine.
- M&D Experience is run by the M&D Group (www.studymedicine.co.uk). Therefore those who are committed to securing a place in medicine or dentistry will benefit from the added support of services on offer by our group. This includes mock interview practice, personal statement preparation, UKCAT assistance, premedical courses, choosing the right school and A-levels and overseas medical and dental school entry.
There are usually three groups of students who attend:
- Those that are undecided on whether medicine or dentistry is indeed the right career choice.
- Those that have decided that medicine or dentistry is definitely what they will apply for and need further work experience and exposure to medicine.
- Those that have already applied via UCAS and would like to use this event for further experience - an excellent talking point at interview!
Beware of false statistics!
As you probably know already, getting accepted into a UK Medical or Dental School is extremely competitive - the national average to get into Medical or Dental School is 11%.
Other similar day courses may claim that about 70-90% of students (3 in 4) get a place at Medical School after completing their course. These statistics are likely to be inaccurate for the following reasons:
- Statistics may be drawn from a small pool of students who were already likely to get into Medical School.
- Not every students who attended their course will give feedback on their medical school application, so perhaps they only collect the positive feedback?
- There are no shortcuts to get into Medical School. How can 80-90% of students secure place at Medical School simply by completing a one day course?
M&D Experience is part of the M&D Group, who have been involved in medical and dental school admissions for over 15 years. We know what it takes to get into medical or dental school and our aim is to be totally transparent about what we offer and have no need to market our course using ‘false’ statistics.
Students who attend the M&D Experience are from a range of backgrounds and academic ability.
M&D wants to give students realistic expectations about their future so that they can plan their career with the correct support and guidance.
